A card protector is a token that is placed on top of cards at a card game and protects them from accidentally being "mucked". In poker, mucked cards are those folded and thrown back to the dealer, or into a discard pile. Once your cards are "mucked", your hand is dead, weather you wanted it to be or not.

Why should you use a card protector? The primary reason is that you don't want your cards to be accidentially mucked by another player or the dealer. Even if you have put your money in the pot, once your cards are mucked, you're out of luck.
